Clearing out positions temporarily to leave the market, starting a big learning plan
Since reaching a new high in January, I made a big adjustment to my portfolio, buying when prices were falling and selling when they were rising. I tried to do a T+0 to reduce losses, but ended up getting trapped.
Yesterday, I predicted that the Middle East conflict would escalate and reduced my positions at the open. Unexpectedly, the market rebounded, and I sold some more at the close, hoping to buy back at a lower price tomorrow to lower my cost. But I woke up in the middle of the night to find the US stocks all rallying, and I couldn’t sleep from frustration.
This morning, my mindset was already a bit broken. I had two ideas at the open: one was to buy China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) on the dip for a rebound, and the other was to chase Hengke. I ultimately chose Hengke, but CNOOC rebounded four points on the low open, while Hengke opened high and then declined.
After calming down, I was shocked to realize that I had stuck to my long-term, diversified, long-term investment logic for years and made money from it. Now, I was risking a big position in short-term trading just to recover a few points of loss.
At noon, I decisively cleared all my funds and engaged in reverse repurchase agreements. Fortunately, my returns this year are still positive, so I consider myself to have escaped relatively unscathed. I won’t enter the market again unless there’s a major drop in the short term. Instead, I will focus on learning investment knowledge.
My plan is to find about ten top investors on forums like Jisi Lu and Xueqiu, systematically study their posts from recent years, and clarify my own investment logic before making any moves.
I’ve already followed a few well-known experts on Jisi Lu, but I’d like everyone to recommend some hidden gem bloggers. I will record some learning insights in this post and share content I find useful.
