US military may have struck a girls' school in southern Iran due to outdated intelligence, CBS News reported citing sources familiar with the preliminary investigation of the incident.

According to one of the channel's sources, the US did not specifically target the school and may have "accidentally hit it," misidentifying the area as part of an Iranian military base. CBS News reports that the school building was located in close proximity to two IRGC facilities.

Two other sources from the channel clarified that the Israeli armed forces did not conduct operations in that area on that day, so responsibility for the attack likely lies with the American military. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told CBS News that "the investigation is ongoing" and "at this point, no conclusions have been reached, and it would be irresponsible to claim otherwise."
