(MENAFN) A top Iranian security official issued a stark warning to Washington on Wednesday, declaring that the United States would pay a “heavy price” for the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during weekend airstrikes carried out jointly by American and Israeli forces.

Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, took to social media platform X to level the accusation directly at President Donald Trump, charging that the U.S. leader had dragged the American people into an “unjust” war against Iran.

In pointed remarks directed at Trump, Larijani raised the human cost of the conflict in stark terms. “Now he must calculate: with over 500 American soldiers killed in just the past few days, does America still come first – or Israel?” he wrote.

Khamenei was killed Saturday alongside members of his family and several high-ranking Iranian military commanders during the sweeping joint U.S.-Israeli strike campaign on Iran. The assault triggered an immediate and forceful Iranian counter-offensive, with successive waves of missiles and drones launched against Israeli targets and American assets throughout the Middle East.

The inflammatory statement from Larijani marks one of the most direct and senior-level responses from Tehran since the death of its supreme leader — and signals that Iran has no intention of standing down.
