According to The Paper, network information security engineer Li Dong was summoned by Zhangjiajie police in 2024 on suspicion of running a casino. They seized his 103 bitcoins and converted them into over 49.61 million RMB; four days after being released on bail, Li Dong was taken away again by Xuchang police, who confiscated approximately 80 bitcoins. The prosecution accuses Li Dong of exploiting a program vulnerability in the server of the overseas online gambling website "Kaiyun Sports" to steal personal information of over 1.84 million Chinese citizens. According to the charges, in 2020, Li Dong selected high-rebate, high-downline代理 accounts from the "Kaiyun Sports" gambling website's代理 accounts, replaced the rebate bank accounts of these代理 accounts with his own controlled bank accounts, and stole a total of over 35.5 million RMB in代理 rebate funds from the "Kaiyun Sports" gambling website. Among these, over 6.44 million RMB was transferred into 13 bank cards purchased by Li Dong; additionally, using a certain gang to purchase virtual currencies like Bitcoin and transfer them into Li Dong's wallet, this stolen fund amounted to over 29.05 million RMB. Regarding the theft charges, the defense argues that the evidence is insufficient, and there is a lack of proof linking the relevant account transactions to the gambling website and Li Dong. The defense also states that Li Dong's previous guilty confession was obtained through threats by police officers against his pregnant wife and requests that it be excluded as illegal evidence.
