Food packaging comes with calorie counts these days. But here's the thing—nobody's really tracking what each AI query costs in terms of energy. Every time you fire up a large language model, there's actual computational power burning behind the scenes. Shouldn't we be equally transparent about that?
Imagine if every LLM request showed you the energy footprint, just like nutrition labels show calories. Users might think twice before running massive inference operations. Companies might optimize their models differently. The whole industry could start measuring twice and deploying once.
It's an interesting paradox: we're obsessed with quantifying consumption in some areas but stay completely blind to it in others. Maybe it's time we put an energy meter on AI queries the same way we put calorie counters on snacks.
