América Móvil Calls Off Joint Bid For Telefónica's Chilean Assets, To Pursue Independent Strategy
América Móvil has decided to withdraw from its collaborative bidding arrangement with ENTEL for the acquisition of Telefónica’s Chilean telecom operations. The two companies have mutually agreed to terminate the non-binding partnership framework they had established in July, signaling a shift in their approach to the potential deal.
Following the decision to end the joint venture talks, América Móvil has indicated that it will still seek participation in the acquisition process, but now as an independent bidder rather than as part of a consortium. This strategic pivot allows the telecommunications giant greater flexibility in structuring its proposal and negotiation terms.
The original collaborative framework between América Móvil and ENTEL represented an initial exploration into a combined bid for Telefónica’s Chilean portfolio. However, the termination of this arrangement suggests differing strategic priorities or deal structure preferences between the two telecom operators. By proceeding individually, América Móvil maintains its interest in the Chilean market assets while retaining operational autonomy in its bidding approach.
As one of Latin America’s leading integrated telecommunications service providers, América Móvil has substantial experience navigating major acquisitions and competitive tender processes across the region. The company holds the distinction of being the world’s largest mobile operator by subscriber base when excluding operations in China and India, positioning it as a formidable contender in any major telecom asset acquisition.
The withdrawal from the joint arrangement may reshape competitive dynamics around the potential Telefónica transaction, with each party now positioned to evaluate the opportunity independently and potentially submit separate proposals.
