Brooklyn man charged with phishing scam, stole $16 million from CEX users
[Brooklyn Man Charged with Phishing Scam, Stealing $16 Million from CEX Users] The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that 23-year-old resident Ronald Spekto is accused of stealing approximately $16 million worth of cryptocurrency from around 100 CEX users.
The man, known online as “lolimfeelingevil” (meaning “I am full of evil”), is alleged to be the mastermind behind a phishing and social engineering scam. Prosecutors say Spekto impersonated CEX platform customer service representatives to trick users into transferring their cryptocurrencies into accounts under his control.
Prosecutors also pointed out that Spekto would falsely claim that victims’ digital assets were at risk of being stolen by hackers, thereby deceiving victims into falling for the scam. It is claimed that he then attempted to launder these illegally obtained digital assets through cryptocurrency mixers, token exchange services, and crypto gambling sites.
